Abhyanga Massage

Abhyanga (Oil Massage Therapy)

Abhyanga is a full-body therapeutic oil massage using warm, herb-infused oils selected based on one’s dosha (body constitution). Performed by one or two therapists in synchronized movements, it stimulates circulation, detoxifies the body, improves skin tone, and deeply relaxes muscles and nerves. This treatment is foundational in Kerala’s Panchakarma programs and is often done daily for rejuvenation. The oils penetrate deep into tissues, promoting flexibility and relieving joint pain. It’s also known to reduce stress, calm the nervous system, and improve sleep. Many Kerala spas and Ayurvedic hospitals use Abhyanga as a preparatory treatment before detox therapies like Virechana or Basti. Abhyanga is not only therapeutic but also preventive, preserving youth and vitality.

Shirodhara (Oil Dripping on Forehead)

Shirodhara involves gently pouring a continuous stream of warm medicated oil (or sometimes buttermilk or milk) onto the forehead, particularly over the ‘third eye’ chakra. It is a deeply relaxing therapy for mental clarity and emotional balance. Practiced widely in Kerala’s Ayurvedic centers, it helps treat insomnia, anxiety, headaches, high blood pressure, and burnout. The rhythmic dripping induces a meditative state and calms the mind, similar to the effects of deep meditation. It’s especially recommended for Vata and Pitta imbalances. Shirodhara is often prescribed in stress-related disorders or after trauma to relax the central nervous system. The treatment typically lasts 30 to 60 minutes and is often followed by head or full-body massage for better oil absorption.

Pizhichil

Pizhichil (Medicated Oil Bath)

Pizhichil is a luxurious therapy where warm, medicated oil is continuously squeezed and massaged onto the body from cloth pieces dipped in oil. Two to four therapists apply the oil in synchronized strokes while gently massaging the muscles. It is a powerful rejuvenation therapy often dubbed the “King’s treatment,” as it was historically reserved for royalty. Ideal for treating rheumatic diseases, paralysis, arthritis, and muscle stiffness, it combines the benefits of sudation (sweating) and oleation (oil application). Pizhichil enhances immunity, slows aging, and revitalizes the entire body. It is a popular choice in Kerala’s monsoon health retreats for revitalizing both body and mind. Treatment is tailored to the individual’s constitution and typically spans 7 to 21 days.

Njavarakizhi (Rice Bolus Therapy)

Njavarakizhi (Rice Bolus Therapy)

Njavarakizhi is a unique massage using boluses made of Njavara rice cooked in milk and herbal decoctions. The warm boluses are pounded and rubbed over the body by two therapists in rhythmic movements. This treatment nourishes tissues, strengthens muscles, and enhances complexion. Especially beneficial in muscular dystrophy, neurological disorders, and emaciation, it’s also excellent for post-illness rehabilitation. The therapy generates heat, which promotes circulation and detoxification while deeply nourishing the skin. Njavarakizhi is commonly included in Kerala’s rejuvenation and anti-aging Ayurvedic programs. The rice used is grown locally in Kerala, making it a regionally specific treatment with centuries-old roots.

Elakizhi (Herbal Leaf Poultice Massage)

Elakizhi involves using poultices made of medicinal leaves, herbs, and spices sautéed in medicated oil. These warm boluses are applied to the body with rhythmic massage. It’s widely practiced in Kerala for treating joint pain, back pain, spondylitis, and arthritis. The therapy promotes sweat-induced detoxification and relieves stiffness and inflammation. The heat from the bolus helps the herbal actives penetrate the skin, stimulating nerves and muscles. Elakizhi is often used as a preparatory step before Panchakarma or as standalone pain management. The leaves are selected based on the patient’s condition, usually including anti-inflammatory and analgesic herbs like tamarind, castor, and drumstick leaves.

Kati Basti (Lower Back Oil Retention Therapy)

Kati Basti focuses on treating lower back issues. A small, dough-ring reservoir is built on the lower back and filled with warm medicated oil. The oil is kept warm and retained for 30–40 minutes, allowing deep absorption into muscles and spinal tissues. Commonly prescribed in Kerala for sciatica, lumbago, disc problems, and chronic back pain, this therapy reduces inflammation, improves spinal flexibility, and strengthens lumbar muscles. After the oil retention, the back is gently massaged and steamed. The therapy is non-invasive, soothing, and provides long-term relief for musculoskeletal and neurological complaints without side effects. Regular sessions are especially beneficial for office workers and aging individuals.

Herbal Powder Massage

Udwarthanam (Herbal Powder Massage)

Udwarthanam is a dry massage using fine herbal powders rubbed in upward strokes. It’s a traditional Ayurvedic treatment for obesity, cellulite, and metabolic disorders. The powders, often made from chickpea flour, triphala, and aromatic herbs, exfoliate the skin, increase lymphatic drainage, and reduce fat deposits. Practiced extensively in Kerala, it improves skin tone, enhances blood flow, and balances Kapha dosha. This treatment also sharpens body contours and helps in weight management when combined with dietary regulation. Unlike oil massages, Udwarthanam creates friction and heat, stimulating the body’s natural detox pathways and clearing blockages from energy channels.
